Why organic materials?

My work moves in the space between design and art. As in design, the material is central, but the expression is more abstract and free from the functional demands often associated with design.

I work with biomaterials — primarily a self-developed bioplastic made from potato starch, glycerol, agar agar, and water — to explore how our relationship to materials shapes the way we see the world. Displacement is an important part of my process: I mix the bioplastic with pigments I produce from seagrass and algae, materials often perceived as dirty or unpleasant, and transform them into objects or paintings on glass. By evoking fascination, I aim to spark curiosity about natural resources that are essential yet have lost their perceived value.

Painting is a central part of my practice. The abstract, fluid expression emerges intuitively in the moment, in a kind of co-creation with the bioplastic. The material has a life of its own, and when I paint with it, it is never fully possible to predict how it will move, dry, or change. This unpredictability becomes part of the process and gives the works their form.

My practice is grounded in a critical reflection on material use in a time when our current systems are unsustainable. I believe that greater material literacy can open up new ways of thinking about circularity, care, and responsibility. Even in an increasingly digital world, materials will continue to matter — they protect, warm, and carry tactile and sentimental value.
